COUCHSURFING.COM
Couchsurfing.com allows travelers to book free stays with locals in 200+ countries & territories. Hosts are verified by government ID and subject to rankings/reviews by verified guests.
Carter has hosted guests from Spain & Germany in NYC, and he has stayed with hosts in Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Belgium and Norway. He can provide references to new users!
FREE WALKING TOURS
A free walking tour is a superb way to get one's bearings after arrival to a new city, especially in countries new to the tourism scene. Sandeman's New Europe and Strawberry Tours are two renowned brands with tips-based excursions in dozens of cities, with guides who are eager to share "hidden gems" and local watering holes. Don't underestimate these troves of intel!

ATLAS OBSCURA
Atlas Obscura highlights strange, unusual, and "obscure" attractions around the world. It's often the first place Carter consults in building a travel itinerary, in search of weird attractions and unorthodox locales that will add a uniquely memorable element to each globe-trotting adventure.
HOSTELWORLD.COM
The premier online booking platform for hostels, bungalows & casa particulares around the world. While limited in scope for developing nations, the free cancellation and refund policies pose tremendous upside for those traveling on a shoestring budget. Well-worth a consult before Booking.com or similar sites.
